So I got a cheap-o tripod last night for my new camera (Canon Powershot S5) and took it outside to grab a few shots of the moon.

Here's the best I could get out of 12x zoom, but I was pleasantly surprised for my first try.

This pic is at 100%, all I did was crop it.

And then these are just a few blown up to show detail

You might want to lengthen your shutter speed to get a clearer shot.

Yea I did a pretty wide range of shots, but unfortunately the longer exposures were on the extreme side, and came out too bright. The other problem though, is I'm on a pretty cheap-o tripod, and at max zoom, movement on exposure shots tends to become rather noticeable.

But I plan to go out again tonight and try, so I'll give it a shot.

I also forgot about a setting on my camera, where I can drop the resolution from 8mp to 5 and effectively get 16x zoom instead of 12.

I'm an art major.

And what surface are you setting your tripod on?

It was outside on a rather sloped, poorly paved "road". i did it in our apartment complex, and unfortunately it was the only place i could even see the moon from.

I also need a real tripod, but I'm not ready for that investment yet. I still need to learn about what to look for in them and get familiar with it in general.

fortunately, I'm a pretty patient guy and know it's all a work in progress. this is my first camera and I have way too much to learn :}

Neat shots, even if they aren't amazing quality. I always like amateur astronomy photos where you can actually see detail. Makes the universe seem a touch closer.

Haha, damn these duplicate threads on separate boards.

But you're right Danton. That's the coolest thing to me. I mean, I used this zoom just a few days earlier to take a close-up of a damn street sign a block down...and here i am trying to capture the moon. It's a really awesome feeling.

About the universe at large? Always. It's basically the only thing I really care about.
